Broad spectrum antibiotic, a semi-synthetic derivative of ampicillin, with a superior absorption and a bioavailability of 70 to 80 percent with very low toxicity.
It is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and may be combined with clavulanic acid to counteract the betalactamase destruction of penicillin by resistant bacteria.
It is the primary drug for antibiotic prophylaxis.
